Born enslaved in Maryland, she escaped, then returned at night to guide others to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

After a head injury, she said she received dreams and visions that guided her choices.

During the Civil War, she served the Union as a scout and took part in the Combahee Ferry raid, which freed hundreds of enslaved people.

After the conflict, she advocated for women’s suffrage and opened a home for the elderly in Auburn. Her life was guided by active faith and a keen tactical sense.
