Yaa Asantewaa
(1840 – October 17, 1921)
Queen Mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire, she rejected the British demand to surrender the Golden Stool, symbol of the nation’s soul.
In 1900 she rallied the chiefs in Kumasi and led the uprising that laid siege to the fort. Exile did not diminish her stature :
schools and public spaces bear her name, and her memory remains a touchstone of political courage and shared sovereignty. Her example reminds us that a people stands firm when its guardians speak clearly.
