Miriam Makeba

(March 4, 1932 – November 9, 2008)

A South African singer and emblem of anti-apartheid exile, she brought her cause to the UN and to major stages.

She popularized “Pata Pata” and “The Click Song” (Qongqothwane), turning Xhosa phonetics into an artistic signature.

In 1966 she received a Grammy with Harry Belafonte, opening new audiences to music from southern Africa.

She returned home in 1990 and resumed her place in cultural life. Her voice links celebration and testimony.
