Zaouli Mask

Guro, Côte d’Ivoire

The Zaouli mask, emblem of the Guro people, is inseparable from one of Côte d’Ivoire’s most famous dances.

Created in the 20th century, it represents an idealized feminine figure with refined features, a symbol of beauty, grace, and unity.

Always accompanied by the Zaouli dance, it is worn by a masked dancer who, to rapid and intricate percussion, performs steps of exceptional virtuosity.

This performance is regarded as a total art form, blending music, sculpture, costume, and movement.

The Zaouli mask embodies aesthetic harmony and social cohesion, bringing communities together for festivals, ceremonies, and celebrations.
